Great Galtenberg (Großer Galtenberg*, 2424m)
Gratsteig
Region: Tyrol -> Kitzbüheler Alps -> Alpbach Valley
The western slope including the routeOn top
Character:
Hardly known and extremely underestimated: the Great Galtenberg is the highest juggernaut in the Kufstein ward and the absolute attraction in the Alpbach sky not only because of the magnificent outlook at the Kitzbüheler Alps and the Alpine main crest.
The more interesting one of both ascent routes leads you over the so called Gratsteig ("ridge path") and requires not only a good portion of stamina but also an utterly lack of vertigo.
Data:
Ascent: 3.5h
Descent: 2h
Height difference: 1400m
Skill level:
Gear: Day trip
Starting point: Inneralpbach (1050m) Inns: Farmkehralm (1517m)
Course:
Starting from Inneralpbach pursue the gravel road (A16) until you reach the Greitalm (1317m) at the end of the Greiter Graben. The way turns left and leads to the Farmkehralm (1517m). Behind the alm take the path A37 up to the Upper Farmkehralm (1775m). 100m above the alm you will meet a bifurcation. Follow the sign "Gratsteig - steil!" to the right. A slight ascent progresses to the so called Farmkehrpfanne underneath the saddle between the Great and the Little Galtenberg.
An arduous and strenuous ascent up to the col ensues. On top of the landing you will encounter bizarre terrain dominated by rubble. If you are not afraid of a little easy clambering, you should visit the beautiful twin peaks of the Little Galtenberg (2318m) by then.
You attain to the summit of the Great Galty via a rapid 100m ascent and the contiguous ridge passage (very narrow!!!). If still alive then take your meed in enjoying the marvellous 360 degree panorama which will prove that the Galtenberg truly surmounts everything in this region.
The descent is not that difficult. A path leads down the northwestern slope in tedious serpentines back to the Upper Farmkehralm from where the further route is already known.
Variations:
A nice variant for the descent proves the path via the Jagdhütte ("hunting lodge") which branches off at 2000m. It leads over a broad crest first and later through the woods down to Inneralpbach. It is only recommended during dry weather periods because the trail is prone to become boggy after rain.
