Lago di BraiesThe Apostolo Chain and the lonely treeSasso di Signoreon top
Character:
The Lago di Braies ("Pragser Wildsee") is a picturesque tarn residing at the northern border of the Dolomiti di Braies. While open to north, the lake is encircled by rapid mountains in the other three directions: to the west by the Monte Nero (2142m), to the south by the Croda del Becco ("Seekofel", 2810m). Eastern lies the Apostolo Chain which is dominated by the peak of Sasso di Signore.
The latter invites any mountain rambler to a wonderful, lonely and not too easy day trip.
Data:
Ascent: 3.5h
Descent: 3h
Height difference: 950m
Skill level:
Gear: Day trip
Starting point: Hotel Lago di Braies (1496m)
Course:
Starting at the hotel circumvent the shore of the lake's northern tail until you reach a bifurcation. Follow path No. 58 which threads through the wood first and later on via a rubble field to a lonely tree which marks the ascent to the Apostolos' northern rockface. The ascent is not as difficult as it seems from the bottom, but you'll have to take heed of rockfall in some places!
Eventually you will encounter the top of a crest all overgrown with crippled pines. The path to the right leads you to the Apostolo Grande's summit (1995m), from where you can venture a breathtaking look down to the lake now 500 metres below. The path to the left ascends through molesting pines to the pass called Sella Lavina Bianca, 2194m above sealevel at the Sasso's seam.
An ardous ascent ensues via the mountain's southern slope. The path is very slippery at first due to soil und loose rubble but will become more and more rocky and reliable as you gain height. At last the track narrows but stops inclining and after some roundabouts you will find yourself at the bottom of the peak in shape of single rock. Although there`s an iron rope fastened to the steep rockface, I think you won't need any sort of clambering gear to overcome this last few metres to the flat and comfortable top.
Descent: same way back to the Lavina Bianca pass. Hence follow track No. 26 through the gigantic rubble field of the Großer Rosskofl (2259m) until you meet a brook. Take the path which leads through the lake's forest to the village of St. Veith. From there you will attain back to the lake by pursuing the way marked as '1'.
